The smallest and most marginal placements can be taken advantage of using IMP's (Improving Marginal Placements). Crafted from brass, nut heads can bite into small placements while being strong enough to resist being pulled through. These are directly soldered onto wires, allowing a thicker wire to be used and increasing the strength of the IMP. The swage on the wire is colour coded for quick size selection, and allows one side of the wire to slide, enabling the IMP to self-equalize when loaded, thus increasing placement security.

For those pushing into harder grades and needing to take advantage of all protection options, IMPs are invaluable. Micro protection for small cracks: As climbs become more challenging, the need to maximize all available protection increases. Micro protection allows you to protect cracks that normal-sized pieces would not fit. Having these wires on your rack gives you more options.
